Paying tuition with a credit card

A card payment is cheap only when the school does not add a fee, or when rewards you will actually earn are worth more than the fee and you pay the statement in full.

Many bursars accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express through a processor such as TouchNet, Nelnet, or CashNet/Transact. The processor, not the card network, usually adds a convenience fee. In the CFPB's 2022–23 public file, which PayTheBursar uses, the median published card fee is 2.75% across 142 schools. On a $10,000 payment that is about $275. 5 schools in our dataset had an explicit zero card fee. See that list.

Rewards rarely clear a 2.75% fee on their own

A flat 2% cash-back card returns $200 on a $10,000 charge. A 2.75% school fee costs $275. You are $75 behind before any annual fee. A sign-up bonus can close that gap if this payment is what earns the bonus and you would not have earned it otherwise. Put that bonus in the calculator rather than assuming it.

Pay the statement in full. Credit-card interest, often well above 15% APR, overtakes a few hundred dollars of rewards within a billing cycle or two if the tuition balance stays on the card. PayTheBursar does not model a plan to carry that balance, and it is not a good idea.

Look for a fee-free path before you optimize rewards

Electronic check (ACH) is often free, and some cashiers take a check or a fee-free debit card in person. Those facts are school-specific. If our page says "Not verified yet," we did not find a source, and you should read the bursar page. Do not treat a blank as a promise that the method is free.

Debit is not automatically free. Some processors charge the same percent on a debit card as on a credit card. International cards are sometimes billed a higher percent than domestic cards. A percent fee costs the same share of the bill whether you pay once or in pieces. A flat fee can cost more if you split the bill into several card charges.

What to do with the number

Open the school's page, note the checked date, and confirm the fee on the live payment screen before you submit. The amount the processor shows at checkout is the one you will pay. If it disagrees with PayTheBursar, use the correction form on that school and pay the figure the bursar is actually charging.
